Lyric's Wonderland

With the tension on the figure’s face, this piece captures a heaviness the figure is processing.  It also depicts the enchanting and fantastic way that music can transform the space we’re in.  I created this piece after learning of the brutal death of Rasheem Carter, and I was feeling heavy about it.  The cloak of black paint that drapes the top of the piece pours over the scene like dripping blood to depict Black lives lost.  Music, here, is a powerful coping mechanism.  Reality has been deconstructed: the colors of the sunset, the musical instruments, the studio equipment, the flowers, the others, and I have created my own surreal wonderland.  It’s a vivid escape from reality.
